Utmost Life and Pensions

Risk and Regulatory Advisor

Hurst Point Capital and Aspen Insurance Group

Sue Kean is a chartered accountant with 3 years of experience in insurance and financial services, which have included a number of senior roles working with boards and executive committees on risk and regulatory matters. She now has a portfolio career which combines an NED role for a life and pensions business with part-time executive roles at a UK wealth management consolidator and a global (re)insurer.

Sue worked for Old Mutual plc as the chief risk officer and a member of the plc executive committee. Until June 218, Old Mutual plc was a FTSE 1 financial conglomerate operating in South Africa, Europe, the US, and a growing emerging markets business, with particular focus on Africa. In June Old Mutual materially completed the strategy of the “managed separation” which split the group into its four component parts and are currently completing the wind down the London head office. During the managed separation (MS), Sue led the intensive regulatory engagement during separation process and adapted the group’s risk and governance models to cater for the dynamic nature of MS. She also chaired the employee forum providing moral leadership to head office staff who were delivering a strategy involving their own redundancy.

Previously, Sue spent several years with PwC in a variety of audit and consultancy roles, including a two-year secondment to the DTI as the insurance regulatory part of government. She then worked directly for the regulator (FSA) shortly after it was first established. From 22-21, she held a series of senior risk and capital management roles in Aviva, Insurance Australia Group, and Friends Provident. Throughout her career Sue has also been active in a number of industry bodies most notably the European CRO Forum and the European insurance trade bodies.
