Scott Patterson

Dr. Patterson is a retired pharmaceutical executive with 32 years of industry experience, following 13 years in academia. He currently consults for the pharmaceutical and in vitro diagnostics industries. In recognition of his contributions to Trade and Investment Queensland, Australia, he was named an inaugural Queensland Global Connector in 2024.

Most recently, Dr. Patterson spent 10 years at Gilead, joining in early 2015 to lead biomarker discovery and development, along with translational and molecular epidemiology efforts across multiple therapeutic areas, including oncology, inflammation (with a focus on fibrosis), and HBV/HIV cure initiatives. He also oversaw the transition of biomarkers into in vitro diagnostics with a number of diagnostic companies. He played a key role in establishing the Renown Institute for Health Innovation Strategic Collaboration and other translational partnerships and served on multiple Joint Steering Committees for Gilead collaborations.

Previously, Dr. Patterson was at Amgen, Inc. from 1993–2000 and 2003–2015, initially leading proteomics and apoptosis research and later serving as Executive Director, Medical Sciences. In 2003 in this role, he established and led Amgen’s biomarker and in vitro diagnostics programs across all therapeutic areas. From 2000-2003 he was Vice President, Proteomics at Celera Genomics Group where he established their protein-based therapeutic antibody target discovery program and Chief Scientific Officer at Farmal Biomedicines, LLC.

Dr. Patterson has been actively involved in numerous industry and professional groups focused on biomarkers and diagnostics. He served on the Scientific Advisory Board for Cayman Chemical Company, Inc., the Executive Committee of the FNIH PACT, and was an invited member of the National Biomarker Development Alliance and AACR Industry events.

He earned his B.Sc and Ph.D. in Physiology and Pharmacology at The University of Queensland, Australia where he also worked, ultimately as a Senior Research Officer in Dept Physiology and Pharmacology. He was a Staff Investigator at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York, received the Long Island Biological Association, New Investigator award and was the 2002 Barnett Lecturer (Northeastern University).

Dr. Patterson has authored over 120 publications, 25 book chapters and 9 patents.
